Day 47 - Sept 4 - Eureka - One More Day of Wonderous Sites

Today we continued on trip on our way to the Napa valley in California. We moved from Coos Bay on the Pacific coast of central Oregon to Eureka in Northern California. The scenery continues to be breathtaking.

Our first stop was at Bandon to eat at their bakery. We had a delicious fresh cinnamon bun that was way too filling. At this time Jonah gave us a call which was lost because of poor cell phone coverage. In his voice message he told us that Shenna & Thomas baby's name is Avery Thomas.

We stopped at Point Blanco which is the most westerly point in the continental USA. The gale force winds almost knocked us off our feet when we left the van. We also noticed that the surf was a lot rougher than we had seen on the northern Oregon coast.

When we entered California at Crescent Beach, we noticed a forest fire on a mountain in the distance. It turns out that this fire had just started. The volunteer fire department was being summoned as we passed the village. As we traveled down Highway 101 there was an endless procession of fire trucks on their way to fight the fire.

Highway 101 morphs into the Redwood Forest Highway once it enters California. The trees are as majestic as we remember them from the time we traveled through them with Ken and Brian's parents after Kari and Jonah's wedding in Oregon.

Just outside of the forest, we had a case of deja vu when we drove past an Elk meadow. Ken do you remember climbing the fence to get a better view of the wild Elks?

We stopped in Eureka for the night. Eureka is a lumber town but they have preserved the downtown core. The architecture is Victorian and many of the buildings are in pristine condition. We ate a place called the Oberan Grill and I must admit that my duck dinner was the best meal that I've had on this trip.
