Day 18 - August 6 -San Francisco

Today we moved further south in our trip to southern California. We left Steve's in Grant's Pass in the morning and arrived in San Francisco late in the afternoon. We traveled down Interstate 5 through the Mt. Shasta National Park. As you may be aware there is a forest fire in this area known as the Buckhorn fire. Unfortunately there was a tragic accident last night as one of the helicopters that was used to transport the firefighters crashed and there were many fatalities.

The smoke was heavy in the valleys north of Mt. Shasta but once we passed the mountain the air cleared. It was unbelievably hot in the valley. The thermostat in the car was reading over 100F. It may be a dry heat but that is HOT.

We arrived in San Francisco and the temperature had dropped to below 50F with a very cold wind coming in off the bay.

We are staying in a very quaint hotel in the Marina area of the city. I love the architecture of this city. As you can see from the picture of our hotel each room has a Bay window.

This is a very hilly section of the city. It reminds me of all the cop movies where cars going flying down the hills, such as Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry and Steve MacQueen's Bullitt.
