Day 20 - August 8 Southern California - here we are

We left San Francisco and after some confusion, caused by Gertie our GPS, in downtown San Francisco we managed to get across of the bay and on our way down I5. We went down the San Joaquin valley. It was very interesting because it is basically a desert with abundant irrigation from man made causeways that feed the many orchards along the road. In the areas that are not irrigated we saw several dust devils. The temperature reached 40C along the way.

We crossed the mountains from the San Joaquin valley into LA county. Although the elevation is not that great it was a very steep climb and the numerous disabled cars with blown rads are the proof. They even warn you to turn off you air conditioning as a precaution.

Our destination today was San Bernardino which is east of LA. The LA traffic lived up to its reputation and it took us close to two hours to travel 40 miles. What you can do?

Tomorrow we're off to pick up Ken, Mel, Jase and Cooper at the San Diego airport at noon and then proceed to our vacation home in Mission Beach for the week.
